Do more people go to jail than to college?

10513476_892508824175506_5896618412694483809_nTL;DR Summary

  • This type of quote is known as a “glittering generality”. The clearly implied assertion is that more people go to jail than to college but this is false. The quote makes for good propaganda but it is a lie.
  • Comparing “instant in time” measures, there were 20.6M in college in the fall of 2012 to about 2.4 million in prison or jail or detention. 41% of those aged 18-24 are in college!

Poster source: Occupy Democrats

Even though the quote is dumb, it was shared 17,000 times and “Liked” over 50,000 times (which is the same as sharing since FB, by default, shares your likes to your friends). That this easily disproved quote was shared so widely demonstrates the incredible power of social media propaganda to influence millions of people.

Once again: “Why is the media ignoring ‘this’?”

MediaSilent

This is a fun “meme” to getting targets emotionally riled up so they will share this false claim others. I wrote about this propaganda method not long ago. Some one did a similar “the media are ignoring this!” about an alleged protest in Poland.

“They” are keeping this secret! Why are people ignoring “this”? It “must be a conspiracy!” Share if you agree!

It’s the same as the news web sites that create click bait titles like “Girl opens door and you won’t believe what happens next!”  The “they are ignoring this” meme is just click-bait for more shares and likes.

Actually, “this” was reported on locally, regionally, nationally and internationally!

Panama Free Trade Agreement propaganda video is accurate and effective

SandersPanamaTL;DR Summary

  • In 2011, Bernie Sanders spoke forcefully against a free trade agreement with Panama because Panama operates as a tax haven with secret bank accounts.
  • True-Sanders did speak forcefully against the PFTA.
  • True-Panama does have low corporate tax rates, tax havens and banking secrecy.
  • This is an effective propaganda poster (video) because it is topical, makes good use of facts (not false assertions or logical fallacies), and is conveyed simply and directly. It is also unusual for a propaganda message like this to contain what is effectively data, rather than pure emotional content, although the end result is similar in terms of the target being emotionally jolted to take action.
  • The poster is also effective because of timeliness immediately after widely publicized news reports about tax havens based in Panama. In a way, the news reports could be viewed as “pre-propaganda” which is messaging that prepares a target for propaganda directing one to take action. A conspiracy theorist might say the news reports were pre-propaganda timed to assist the Sanders campaign by reinforcing his policy perspectives.

Effective propaganda poster: Sanders and Trump both fly on jets

12920251_1099659816793738_7132530295407261704_nTL; DR Summary

  • Sanders has traveled by bus and also by airline coach but he recently began using a Gulfstream jet charter too.
  • Trump flies on his own corporate aircraft.
  • Trump is a billionaire and he does seem self-obsessed.
  • Poster appeals to the populist perspective of Sanders and the greedy narcissistic perspective of Trump – but the implication that Sanders does not fly a private jet is no longer true. Truth means little in a good social media propaganda poster! (This was shared into my FB stream).
